4 HVAC Maintenance Tips to Keep Your System Running Efficiently

On average, most HVAC systems last between 15 to 25 years. While you might get lucky and have a long-lasting HVAC unit without doing a thing, the best course of action is to be proactive. With proper HVAC maintenance, you can keep your system running efficiently and smoothly, which will save you money in the long run.

If maintenance is something new to you, then you might not know where to start or what to do. In that case, read on for four tips on HVAC maintenance you should know.

1. Check and Replace Air Filters

Every few months or so, check your HVAC unit’s air filters. Hold them up to the light, and if you can’t see anything through them, then it’s time for new filters.

If you have pets in the house and/or there have been bad weather conditions, then you’ll need to replace these filters more often. Don’t try to stretch out the usage of dirty filters, as they won’t do their jobs efficiently. It’ll make your HVAC unit work harder.

2. Clean Out Your Air Ducts

Your HVAC system’s air ducts can collect lots of dust, mold, and other contaminants over time. If you don’t clean them out, then these harmful things will circulate through your rooms.

Not only will air duct cleaning remove contaminants, but it’ll also ensure that your HVAC system doesn’t work as hard. As a result, your utility bills won’t be sky-high.

3. Clean the Condenser Coils and Drain

The condenser coil is responsible for heat exchange. So if you don’t keep this part clean and in good condition, things can go wrong quickly.

Thankfully, these coils are easy to clean. Turn off your unit and brush debris off with a coil brush. If any coil fins are bent, then straighten them out now.

Then, use a mild solution of soap and water to wash the coils. Rinse with water, and you’re done!

While you’re there, check the condensate drain. Give it a thorough clean if it’s dirty.

4. Visually Inspect Your HVAC Unit

Every month, thoroughly inspect your HVAC unit. Here’s a small checklist of things to look at:

  • Thermostat battery status
  • Register and returns
  • Flue system
  • Condensate system

Outside, you should ensure that the system is level with the ground. Remove debris so that nothing gets stuck and clogs the unit. You should also remove clutter from the indoor HVAC parts to reduce the system’s workload.

Keep Up With HVAC Maintenance

Regular HVAC maintenance is the key to having a unit that runs well. Not only that, but it can also prolong its lifespan, so you’ll save your hard-earned cash.

While some of the maintenance tips here can be DIYed, you can always have a professional do it for you instead. That way, you’ll know it’s done right, and you won’t have to lift a finger either.
